Physical Setting & Preparation

Find a quiet place where you can be undisturbed, preferably near a window where you can see the sky or outdoors where you can feel the spring air. Bring a small bowl of soil and, if possible, a blue flower or stone to represent the emotion we will work with today. Sit comfortably with your back straight but not tense. Place your hands palm down on your thighs, connecting to the earth below. Take three deep breaths, feeling the air fill your lungs completely before slowly releasing it. Notice how the light has changed since winter, how the days continue to lengthen as spring deepens its presence in the land

Opening Invocation | Fosgladh

Fàilte ort, an naoidheamh là fichead de Mhàrt, là de mhùthadh an earraich.(Welcome to you, twenty-ninth day of March, a day of spring transformation.)

A' Mhàthair Talamh, tha mi a' tighinn thugad le mo chridhe fosgailte.(Mother Earth, I come to you with my heart open.)

Air an là seo, tha mi a' faireachdainn gluasad an t-saoghail mun cuairt orm.(On this day, I feel the movement of the world around me.)

Close your eyes and visualize the landscape awakening to spring. Feel the gentle rain that nourishes the soil. See the buds swelling on the trees, the early flowers pushing through the warming earth. Hear the birds that have returned from their winter journeys, singing with renewed vigor. The world is in transition, moving from dormancy to activity, from rest to growth. You too are part of this transition, connected to these ancient rhythms.

Body of the Working | Corp

Tha earrach a' tighinn, agus tha mise ann an staid de bhròn.(Spring is coming, and I am in a state of sadness.)

Ged a tha an saoghal a' dùsgadh, tha mulad nam chridhe.(Though the world is awakening, there is sorrow in my heart.)

A' Mhàthair Talamh, cuidich leam mo bhròn a ghabhail a-steach don earrach agam.(Mother Earth, help me integrate my sadness into my spring.)

Touch the soil in your bowl, feeling its cool texture between your fingers. This soil has known countless seasons of growth and decay, joy and sorrow. It holds the memory of all that has lived and died upon the earth.

Visualize yourself standing by a clear spring stream. The water flows steadily, carrying last autumn's leaves downstream. The banks are dotted with the first green shoots of new growth. Above, the sky holds both sunlight and clouds, brightness and shadow. Just as the landscape contains these contradictions, so too can you hold both sadness and the promise of renewal.

Allow yourself to feel the sadness that resides within you. Do not turn away from it or judge it. Like water, let it flow naturally, acknowledging its presence as part of your inner landscape.

The Deep Working | An Obair Dhomhain

A Mhàthair Talamh, gabh ri mo bhròn mar a ghabhas tu ris an uisge.(Mother Earth, accept my sadness as you accept the rain.)

Mar a dh'fheumas an talamh an t-uisge, tha àite aig bròn ann am beatha.(As the earth needs rain, sadness has a place in life.)

A' Mhàthair, tionndaidh mo dheòir gu lusan gorm an dòchais.(Mother, turn my tears into the green plants of hope.)

Place your hands over your heart, feeling its steady rhythm. The Mother of the Earth knows sadness too—the sadness of forests cut down, of species lost, of balance disturbed. Yet she also knows renewal, regeneration, and the return of light after darkness.

Visualize your sadness as a gentle rain falling on the soil of your heart. This rain, though it may feel heavy, is actually nourishing seeds that lie dormant within you—seeds of compassion, wisdom, and deeper understanding. The Mother Earth receives your sadness and transforms it, just as she transforms rain into flowers.

Feel the support of the earth beneath you, solid and unwavering. Your sadness, like the rain, will not last forever. It moves through you as weather moves across the landscape, changing but not diminishing the essential nature of who you are.

Afterthought | Smuain Dheiridh

Take a moment to contemplate:

How might my sadness be nourishing deeper aspects of myself that I cannot yet see? What wisdom might the Earth Mother be offering me through this emotional season?

Closing Blessing | Beannachd Dheiridh

A Mhàthair Talamh, taing dhut airson do chomhfhurtachd ann am bhròn.(Mother Earth, thank you for your comfort in my sadness.)

Mar a ghiùlaineas tu an t-uisge is an grìan còmhla, cuidich leam mo bhròn is mo shòlas a ghiùlan.(As you carry both rain and sun together, help me carry both my sadness and my joy.)

Tha mi a' faireachdainn do neart annam, a' Mhàthair, eadhon ann am bhròn.(I feel your strength in me, Mother, even in my sadness.)

Gun robh beannachd leigheasach na Màthar còmhla rium, an-diugh agus gach latha.(May the healing blessing of the Mother be with me, today and every day.)

Gradually become aware once more of your physical surroundings. Feel the ground supporting you. Notice the sounds around you. When you are ready, open your eyes, carrying within you the understanding that sadness, like all emotions, has its place in the cycle of your life, just as rain has its place in the cycle of seasons.
